Red Hat to issue new Linux at close of February
Red Hat has announced that it will release a new version of its Linux product before March 2007.

The open source company was due to issue Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL 5) by the end of the year, but instead released beta versions in September and November.

However, Matthew Szulik, Red Hat's chief executive, was quoted by CNET as saying: "I'm sure we will ship a gold (version) on February 28th."

The new program is reported to feature Xen virtualisation software, which will allow a computer to run various operating systems at once.

Charles King, analyst at Pund-IT, told CNET that getting the update right means any delay in release is worthwhile.

"Making certain that RHEL 5 is thoroughly locked, loaded and debugged before sending it out the door (is) more important in the end than meeting a deadline," he said.

Red Hat announced its results for the third quarter of 2007 last week.

It reported a total revenue of $105.8 million – a rise of 45 per cent on the corresponding quarter last year.
