MessageLabs: Spam levels at highest since early 2005 |
Spam activity in 2006 reached its highest level since early 2005, according to a new report.
The 2006 Annual Security Report by MessageLabs found that activity reached 86.2 per cent this year, largely on account of increasingly sophisticated 'botnets', which pushed email volumes up by a third overall.
While no one virus caught the headlines this year, 2006 saw the growth of spyware and adware, leading to more targeted attacks.
MessageLabs also found that spam rose suddenly from 63.9 per cent in the third quarter of the year to 73.5 per cent in the final quarter, due to increased botnet activity from the SpamThru and Warezov trojans.
And the security firm is now intercepting two targeted attacks per day – compared to one per week in 2005.
However, the company said that, while businesses are being attacked more than ever before, this does not mean criminals have won.
"Companies can take control of their security and through education, vigilance and the adoption of a managed services approach that goes far beyond the traditional desktop or gateway protection, they can gain peace of mind and the reassurance that the problem is being addressed."
MessageLabs claims to be the world's leading provider of messaging security and management services to business.
