Scotland to invest a further £5m in broadband
The Scottish government has announced it is to invest a further £5 million as it continues to roll-out broadband to Scotland's communities.
Today sees the publication of the government's Broadband Reach Report, which looks at the various technical factors preventing some individuals from accessing broadband.
And deputy first minister Nicol Stephen is insistent that broadband can become "a vital communications tool in the modern era".
Mr Stephen said that the report proves that Scotland is ahead of most other countries in terms of coverage.
He announced that last year's target of rolling-out broadband to every community had been achieved £1.5 million within budget, but added that he wanted to go further.
"I am therefore announcing today an additional £3.5 million for further activity, which will deliver broadband to many more without coverage," said Mr Stephen.
"This gives a total further spend of £5 million. All of this will ensure yet more households and businesses in Scotland can benefit from a high-speed internet connection."
BT claims to have invested more than £120 million in broadband connections in Scotland and is set to invest £1 billion in an internet protocol-based network over the next few years.
