The search engine's latest development, Ask X, boasts a simpler interface that displays three panels. The first panel shows search suggestions, the second contains web listings and the third provides alternative links.

Ask's chief executive Brian Diller told investors during a conference call that Ask X is "the real deal", according to Red Herring.

Vice president of products and user experience Daniel Read said that the company expects the new site to increase loyalty and frequency of use.

The new engine represents the latest attempt of Ask to gain ground on the sector leader Google. Earlier this month, it released AskCity, offering local information and search capabilities.
