Microsoft claims payout from disc replicators
Microsoft has announced it is to receive payment from a disc-copying company whom it blames for the distribution of unauthorised copies of its software.

French company MPO Group's Thai subsidiary allegedly accepted a licence from a company authorising it to replicate discs on behalf of Microsoft. No such licence existed, Microsoft claims.

With the licence accepted, 20,000 counterfeit copies of Microsoft's Exchange and SQL Server were put into circulation.

The software giant now claims to have reached a "multimillion dollar settlement" with MPO.

"We appreciate the steps MPO has taken to tighten their security procedures to prevent a recurrence of this type of wholesale counterfeiting of Microsoft software, and to help track down all those responsible for distributing the counterfeits," read a statement from Microsoft.

Meanwhile, security experts at SophosLabs have warned internet users of an image spam campaign offering Microsoft Vista at a low price. It is unclear whether the email is a phishing scam.
