BT preferred broadband supplier to North Yorkshire
BT has been named as preferred supplier for a state-of-the-art broadband network to North Yorkshire.

NyNet, the group set up by North Yorkshire County Council, made the appointment along with Yorkshire Forward and public sector broadband provider Adit.

Via a high-speed fibre-optic network to a number of 'Points of Presence', the service will provide the county with affordable access to a range of internet-based services.

NyNet expects to launch the service in late summer, 2007.

The city council now hopes the agreement is a step towards revitalising North Yorkshire through new business and social opportunities.

John Anderson, regional director for Yorkshire and Humber at BT, said: "This is an exciting initiative to bring the enormous potential of high-speed information and communications services to the full range of public sector organisations across North Yorkshire."

BT claims to be the UK's largest single investor in telecommunications research and development – last year it put £380 million into innovation.
