German wireless auction raises €56m
An auction of Wimax licenses, also known as broadband wireless access (BWA) licenses in Germany fetched €56 million (£37.5 million).

The nation's regulatory body Bundesnetzagentur said that three out of six bidders were granted licenses to provide broadband services in the country.

German firms Deutsch Breitbanddienste (BDB) and Inquam Broadband joined Luxembourg company Clearwire Europe to quires the 28 regional licenses at the auction on Tuesday.

The licenses cover 82.5 million people and are located in the 3.5 GHz frequency band.

Allen Salmasi, president and chief executive of NextWave Wireless, one of the parent companies of Inquam Broadband, said: "These licenses, each of which provides 42 MHz of spectrum, are ideal for delivering next-generation, Wimax based, wireless broadband services."

The largest high-speed internet provider in Germany, Deutshe Telekom said last month that is would not bid for a Wimax license and instead would focus on other technology developments.
