Microsoft launches Office Communications beta
Microsoft has launched a private beta version of Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 which will enable companies to integrate VoIP technology into the existing telephony infrastructure of the business.

The beta, currently being tested by 2,500 IT staff, allows workers to launch telephone calls from inside MS Office applications while also integrating with the products of a number of other independent software vendors.

Gurdeep Singh Pall, corporate vice president of the unified communications group at Microsoft, said: "The convergence of telecom and data networks is happening rapidly.

"Software will integrate these two worlds, enabling IT managers to deliver new communications possibilities that include VoIP."

He added that Office Communications Server would enable companies and their technology managers to have the flexibility to choose the development and progression of their communications infrastructure

Technology news resource iTWire described this launch as Microsoft's first genuine move into the enterprise telephone systems market.
