Carphone Warehouse gets EU clearance for AOL takeover
Carphone Warehouse's bid for the UK division of AOL's internet access business has received the green light by UK, it has emerged.
The £370 million deal will add 1.5 million broadband customers to Carphone's existing base of 625,000 – making it the third largest broadband provider in the UK.
AOL's telecoms infrastructure has also been bought by the firm in a bid to speed up the establishment of its own local loop network.
The EU's competition authority was quoted by Reuters as saying: "The commission concluded that the transaction would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area."
Carphone plans to unbundled 1,000 BT telephone exchanges, and will now be able to profit from offering its own broadband service.
The company claims to be Europe's leading mobile communications retailer with an annual turnover of £2.4 billion and operating across ten different markets.
