Sky and Google in broadband alliance
British Sky Broadcasting and Google have announced a partnership to bring a range of services to Sky broadband users.

It is the first time Google has joined forces with a partner to deploy its facilities. One feature of Sky's broadband service is to use Google's expertise to provide a user-generated video service.

Google's email service will also be tailored so that Sky's customers can use the @sky.com address. Other communication media such as instant messaging will be supported and voice over internet protocol capability is to be explored.

And Sky will look to Google to enhance its search tools and advertising capacity on its websites, with both companies set to share the profits generated.

James Murdoch, chief executive of Sky, said: "Google has pioneered many of the web's most loved and used features, so I'm delighted that Sky Broadband customers will be the very first online community to enjoy such unrivalled range and quality as well as a commitment to further innovation."

The move follows BT's unveiling of BT Vision – its broadband television service – on Monday.
