Bristol City Council to double Wi-Fi coverage |
Bristol City Council has announced it is to expand its current Wi-Fi service – which covers around three km of the city centre – to reach around six km.
The expansion will make the service the largest of its kind in the UK, covering key businesses, transport routes and disadvantaged communities.
Cityscape, which currently provides the service, has been selected by the council as preferred partner for the project.
Councillor Barbara Janke, leader of the council, said that a high quality, citywide network is key to the city's economic success.
"This new extension to our existing city centre network will be built on a solid and proven framework and can help us develop real, valuable applications that will make a difference to the people of Bristol," she said.
The news comes after Manchester City Council announced plans last week for a Wi-Fi network, covering an area of up to 400 square miles and 2.2 million people.
